TURF GOSSIP. • ■ ■ ' Nominations for the Auckland Racing Club's Winter Meeting (minor events) close to-morrow. Acceptances for the Eginont Racing Club's Winter Meeting, and for the North Canterbury Racing Club's Autumn Meeting close to-day. Handicaps for the Oaniaru T.C.'s Winter Meeting will be declared by Mr H. Brinkman on Monday. Glentruin was a visitor to the Ificcarton track yesterday morning. She has just been clipped, and looks in great condition after her sojourn in the Xorth Island. The three-year-old, Card Trick, by The Ace from Counterfeit, has rejoined Sir G. Clifford's team at Chokeborc Lodge. F. D. Jones is at present handling at Riccarton, an attractive yearling gelding, by Paladin from Waterspray, half brother to Pilliewinkic. Riccarton trainers are finding some difficulty in securing stable assistants, and there is at present a scarcity of good strong lads and boys willing to become apprenticed. It is the intention of Mr T. 11. Lowry, the Hawkc's Bay owner, to dispose of all his horses at present in training, to make room for the large batch of yearlings he has in hand. The following rehandicaps have been declared for tho Eguiont Racing Club's Meeting:—Hurdles, Koauau .11.5; Telegraph Handicap, Partaga 7.10; Hack Steeples, Uncle Davo 10.1; Flying Handicap, Pouma 8.1; Mcltae Handicap, Euphonium 8 2; Tawluti Handicap, Eden Hall 9.2, Subjection 8.5.

Lord Stradbrokc, the former Governor of Victoria, has made a handsome gift tc George Young, the jockey who rodo The Night Patrol for him in the majority of his races. While in Sydney for the A.J.C. Autumn Meeting, the Governor presented Young with a silver match-box holder, suitably engraved,, including the Eoyal crest. - J. Muiiro ib having a -wonderfully successful season, aud is drawing fur- j tlier away from the other Sydney jockeys in the winning list. He has increased his total at Sydney and provincial meetings to 36A, and is 11* wins ahead of J. Toohey, who has not been riding with much luck during the past few weeks. Munro's bare winning foes on Windbag alone this season, have givo him about £llOO, buj> it is safe to say that something more than the amount provided by the rulos has accompanied each win on that horse. Then there has been Valicaro to assist in | substantially increasing Munro's earn- ■ ings. I Affirm, by Nassau from Brayton, and therefore brother to the Eiccarton trained Tarleton, won the Park Handicap, 1} miles, at the Sandown (N.S.W.) races on- April 24th, and followed thiß up by having a runaway victory in the Eight-hour Handicap, 1* miles, at Moonee Valley the next day, covering the distance' in 2min 32sec, breaking the record for that race by a second, and, equalling the course record. Affirm, now four years old, was bred by Mr G. L. Stead, and sold by • him to go to Australia. He was later disposed o£ to his present owner for 900gs at tho Allendale dispersal sale in 1924. A winner at the Bosehill (Sydney): races.on April 2Cth 'was Oho Cho Son, who easily accounted for the second division of the Maiden Nursery Handicap. Cho Cho San is a three-year-old filly by Absurd, from Madam Butterfly, and was bred by Mr G. M. Currie. She was sold as a yearling for 550 guineas to J. Kelso, who at present owns and trains her. Landbird was given his first schooling over the steeplechase fences this season, at Hastings on Saturday, but gave an indifferent display, and stopped at one of the obstacles. He is, howevor, a good jumper, and by the time ho is asked to sport silk, ho is oortaiu to justify the good opinions formed of him when he. finished in front, of the field in the Wanganui Steeplechase last year. Black Art has been one of tho regular workers on the Hastings track, with a view to competing in winter events, but he has developod the leg ailment which put him aside last year, and at present is on the retired list. Sturdee has been giving every satisfaction in his schooling essays on tho Hastings course, and provided everything goes well with the big Advaace gelding, he will be a serious proposition in cross country events during the winter; season. Merry Singer, in the same stable, has also been giving good displays over the big fences. < Comical, one of the most proficient candidates for jumping honours in the North Island, was not nominated for the Auckland or Wanganui Meetings, owing to recently receiving a knock to a leg, necessitating a let up, on his preparation. His -first public appearance will be at tho Hawke's Bay Wiutor Meeting, followed by a trip to Trentham and Eiccarton. Tho well-known trainer P. Riddle returned from Australia yesterday, with Dixie Fox and Deauwood. Logan Chief, who has been spelling for some time, will shortly resume work. Gleaming is making a slow recovery from the injuries he received at Ashburton, consequently it has been decided to givo tho son of Galindo a spell, and Tie will not race again until next season. The effort to train the Americanbred trotter Brigand has not proved successful, owing to unsoundness, and ho has been placed out of commission. The Porbury Park Trotting Club has received good support for its 1927 New Zealand Trotting Stakes Nineteen sires aro represented. Amongst them are Petcreta (6), Loreno's Todd (4), Nelson Bingen (4), Great Audubon (2), Ballin (2), El Carbine (2), Bon Homme (2), and Bon Patch (2). Poterwah, who was heavily backed at Forbury Park, is having a few days' rest prior to being shipped to Gisborne.
