WELL HANDLED

EXHIBITION RAILWAY TRAFFIC. It will take a week or bo to compile the figures relating to the passenger traffio on the Canterbury section of the * railways which was due to the Dunedin Exhibition. Returns from all stations have not yet come to hand and when received they will require to be summarised, and the complete in* formation will take some time to prepare. The staff under Mr H. Chapman, District Traffic Manager, and the Christchurch railway station staff, under Mr H. D. Lowry, stationmaster. are deserving of the highest praise for the manner in which the extraordinary traffic induced by the Exhibition was handled. It involved a great deal of extra work on both staffs, and all the officers of the Department concerned rose to the occasion and did good work. The large numbers who travelled were handled without a single hap. On some occasions there have been delays, but none has occurred that could have been foreseen and provided for, and these delays have not been numerous. At some periods the traffic between Christohuroh and Ashburton has been more like that on a busy suburban line, and Mr Chapman's staff had no easy task in plotting out the different services, including provision for the crossing of special trains which is a work of considerable complexity and responsibility.
