THEATRE BURNED.
SHAKESPEARE MEMORIAL. MUSEUM AND PICTURES SAVED. (BT CABLE—rEESS ASSOCIATION-—COrTSIGHT.) IRECIBB'S TELSSBAMS.) LONDON, March 7. Fire destroyed the' Shakespeare Memorial Theatre and Tower at Stratford-on-Avon, but the museum and picture gallery were saved. A passer-by at 3 o'clock in the afternoon noticed smoke pouring from a chimney of the theatre. Five fire brigades eventually arrived, and thousands of spectators watched the hopeless fight to save the theatre. Combining strenuous efforts with a favourable wind, the firemen prevented the fire from spreading to the museum and gallery: The flames licked up the large quantity of woodwork in the theatre, and only the bare walls remain, while the tower resembles a gigantic chimney. The fire was visible from an extensive area. It is feared that many, valuable costumes, stored under the stage of the theatre, have been destroyed. [The Stratford Theatre is part of the Shakespeare Memorial, built in 1879. The memorial, which < stands on the banks of the Avon, comprises the theatre, a picture gallery, and » library. Many world-famed actors and actresses have appeared on the stage of the little theatre.]
