A NEW MOTOR-SHIP. THE NORDVARD. A somewhat unexpected arrival at Lyltelton yesterday was the new Swedish motorship Nordvard, -from Galveston, Port Arthur, and New Orleans, with case oil and.general cargo. Now on her second voyage, tho Nordvard represents the very latest in motor cargocarriers. She was built at Malmo, Sweden, last year, and is a fine, roomy ship of 4111 tons. Her dimensions are: Length 375 ft, beam 43.9 ft, depth 27ft, and sho is propelled by n four-cyclo Diesel engine o£ 2700 h.p. -On her present voyage sho has averaged 11 knots per hour. Her accommodation for both officers and crew is excellent. There is a small refrigerating plant for the ship's stores, and tho quarters aro heated by steam radiators. The winches and steering gear and all auxiliary machinery aro driven by electricity. The Nordvard is commanded by Captain S. Ncdlend. She loft New Orleajis on December 29th, cleared tho Canal on January"" 6th, and had an uneventful voyage to Lyttelton. A westerly gale was experienced on Saturday, which delayed the vessel fo/ a few hours. The vessel has cargo for discharge here, and at Brisbane, Sydnoy, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Fremantle. Sho has case oil, sulphur in bulk and bag, and general cargo. A peculiar position in regard to her call at Lyttelton is that sho has only 51J tons of general cargo to discharge here. When she sailed sho had aboard a large quantity of case oil for both Lyttelton and Timaru, but-this cargo has, during the past few days, been diverted to Australian ports. . It is surmised that _ the sudden activity by tho oil companies in the distribution of benzine in bulk has resulted in the Nordvard's cargo not being required here.
