CHRISTMAS MAILS.
POST OFFICE HAS A BUSY DAY. iSaturday was the last day dn which mails posted in Christchurch will reach London before Christmas, and consequently there was a rush all day on the part of the public to get their greetings away. People had been advised to post early and most of them did so to a j greater extent this year than previously, but nevertheless a large quantity | of mail matter was placed in the posting boxes on Saturday, giving the of- i ficials a busy time in the handling of it! <An augmented staff was employed in the afternoon, and was able to get i away the last of the mails, which closed at 5.15 p.m., an hour later. The mail was sent north by the ferry steamer and will be dispatched for j London, where it is duo on December 24th, by the Vancouver route. The following amount of mail matter has been sent from Christenurch i to the North Island for dispatch to London during the past fortnight, the figures for a similar period last year being also given:— 1925 1924 lbs lbs Letters 440 (ttl Other, articles ... 987 1395) Marine p.o. letters ... 781 nM Marine p.o. other mail 1347 68& Totals ... £555 3a97 The figures show a slight increase over those of last year. In addition to the mail sent via Vancouver, specially addressed mail was sent away previously, including 60 bags of Christmas illustrated "Weekly Press" an- ; nuals and other similar publications posted earlier in the week, these going Home by direct steamer.
