UNEMPLOYMENT.
RETURNED SOLDIERS' NEEDS. Though, tlio position as regards unemployment is somewhat easier and the Citizens' Committee is able tc meet present demands, it is realised that soon 64 returned soldiers will be thrown out of work and a number of men who have secured a few days' work from the rush of National Week will again, bo unemployed. There were three applications for employment at the City Council Chambers and three at the Labour. Department yesterday. *. .-Ms ■ :■ Tho executive of the Citizens' Unemployment Committee met yesterday ai;cj decided that for the next week tke present gang at work on the Ayovi' banks would be kept on, and a few more men taken on to make the total number employed up to 50. Another appeal for help k to he made to those firms and employers who have not so far responded. A squad of men made a start yesterday with the work of oleajiing lip the river bank in the vicinity of tho Bridge of Remembrance. The Christchurch Ministers' Association forwarded to tho secretary of the Citizens' Unemployment Committee tho sum of £lo—the only contribution received yesterday. Weight-Guessing Competition. The first ajid secoud prize-winners in, the weight-guessing competition run by Messrs Dixon Brothers, in aid of the Unemployment Fund, have been fixed, but the winners of the four other prizes have yet to be decided by the Town Clerk. _The correct weight of the bullock was 1593i!1b, and tho first prize of £lO wasi awarded to Mr It. Cook, Sock burn, who guessed 1594.1b; the second prize of £5 fell to Mr 11. L. Oakes, Hast rick street, St. Albans, Christchurch, who guessed 1'593i1b. w •Messrs Dixon Brothers provided the £2O for the prizes. From the sale of ISSfi tickets at (id each the fund benefited to the extent of £39 13s.
