Church News. Great improvements havo bee£ effoctcd by tho painting of All Saints' Church, the Parish Boom, and vfcaragc. They have also been repaired ami pit in order, and as the work was wcl done, all the buildings look very neat Fortunately, no harm was done io tho church buildings during tho recent slips, except that the garden at the hick of i tho vicarago was filled with mud. It j is hoped to get this cleared as ;oon as j it all dries up. I Concert. | Miss Marian Woodhouse and her Glee ! Club are to give another concert in the Parish Boom, when a musical treat is promised to all who attend. These concerts have been greatly enjoyed in the past, and it is hoped tlmt on this occasion the Pariah Boom will be well filled. Visit of Fleet. The residents of Sumner were charmed yesterdav bv the way in which the men of tho" U.S. Navy expressed their appreciation of the hospitality shown bv the .Sumner residents. The men appeared extremely grateful for what was done for them, but what they appeared to appreciato moro than anything were tho invitations they received to private homes. Quite a number of residents entertained the men at lunch, and they wore more than repaid for any trouble they took by the sincere thanks of their guests when they took their departure. Ladies' Guild. At the meeting of the Sumner Ladies' Guild of the Seamen's Institute, Mrs Merry presiding, the treasurer's statement showed a balance of £l3 15s lOd. ►Hospital visiting was reported upon by Mesdames Merry, C. Crosby, and T. B. Boulton. Mrs Gray uudertook to visit j during August. It was—decided to ask fifteen members to assist with the tea to be given to the American sailors. Mesdames Baker, Trcrise, and Forrest kindly offered to arrange the programmo for the next concert at Lyttelton. Votes of thanks were passed to Mesdames H. J. Marrincr, Trerisc, and Smithson for prizes, and to Mesdames W. C. Collins and \V. H. Brown for the rent of the room for tho euchro party. Mesdames C. Crosby, Baker, A. A. Cheshire, and I. Illingworth offered to take charge of the cake and sweets stall. It was decided to hold a hardup social in aid of the Guild funds. Mesdames C. Forrest and I. Wilson were appointed conveners. Rifle Shooting. Tho second of the competitions for Mrs W. H. Nicholson's prize was held this week. Mesdames H. D. Bates and H. Miller both received points for tho aggregate, Mrs Miller becoming holder of the brooch for the week.
