ASCENT OF MOUNT COOK.

A REMARKABLE RECORD. Word was received in 'Wellington on Monday that Mr Jack Hoss, a 17-year-old student of the Wellington Technical College, had climbed Mount Cook.''with Guides Frank Milne and Vic. Williams. After leaving the Haast Hut the party used skis over the Great Plateau to the Linda Glacier. Tho ascent of' the summit and descent to the Haast Hut occupied 14 hours 35 minutes.

Mount Cook has been climl>ed once previously this season, on February 10th, when Messrs F. W. Vosseler and Jack Rawnley, both of Wellington, with Guide Milne, climbed it in 18hrs 17min.

Mr Ross by this last performance has put up a very remarkable record for a yqung man in his first season of high climbing . (says the "New Zealand Times"). During the four months he has been down at the Hermitage he has climbed at least 18 peaks, inolud/ ing Cook, Malte Brun, Darwin, th/ 3 Minarets, and Hochstetter Dome. .H'ib climb of Malte Brun was a record, in company with a companion, Mr F?b/herbert,. and without guides, he /lefft the Malte Brun hut at 4.30 one mbrning. and by remarkably fast olij/.b/ing reached the top by 9 a.m. The summit was shrouded in cold mist, so.' aftor leaving a record-of the ascent, yn© two young men started,the descend, which was accomplished in 3i hours/ / Only those who know the difficulties' encountered on Malte Brun will b/> /able to realise the excellence of thys magnificent performance.
