QUEEN VICTORIA MEMORIAL.

NEW ZEALAND'S CONTRIBUTION

An interesting communication from Sir James Allen, the Dominion's High Commissioner in London, has been received by Mr George Humphreys, of Christ-church, relative to that portion of the Queen Victoria Memorial, near the entrance to Buckingham Palace, which was contributed by New Zealand. The High Commissioner's letter arises out of correspondence which appeared in "The Press" towards the end of last vear referring to the memorial. In the issue for Decemer 22nd appeared a letter from Dr. E. G. Levinge, asking for information as to which portion of the Victoria Memorial was that to which' the New Zealand Government had contributed £15,000, and stating that whilst the portions contributed by other British Dominions overseas bore prominent inscriptions, he had not been able, when he visited the Memorial, to find the New Zealand portion. In the issue for December 24th, Mr George Humphreys wrote giving a graphic description "of the New Zealand portion of the Memorial, and adding: "Unfortunately the inscription, denoting that it is our Dominion's contribution, is in such small letters and so inconspicuously placed as to render it completely unnoticed by the passer-by "not keenly in search of'the giver's name." Evidently this correspondence was brought under the notice of the Hisrh Commissioner, who, in his letter to Mr Humphreys, writes:— "You may be interested in learning that as the result of representation? which I made .to the authorities concerned in the spring of 1924. considerable improvement has been effected in the letterincr recording that certain groups of the Queen Victoria Memorial are the gift of New Zealand, by having had it gilded bv a new process; and it is now very much more distinct."
