TIMARU. Social and Personal. Miss Newman (Wellington) and the Misses Newman (Christehureh) will spend Christmas with Mrs J. P. Newman (Moana). Miss Henrietta Leckie and Mr Douglas Cox (Wellington) are the guests of Mrs N. K. Cox (Wai-iti road). Mrs S. M. Elworthy and Miss Elworthy (Claremont) are the guests of Mrs Melville Jameson (Otumarnnia). Dr. and Mrs F. Bowe (Wai-iti road) returned from Tekapo yesterday. Mrs Shand (Dunedin) is the guest of the Misses Shand (Craighead). Mrs W. Hav (Sefton street) left yesterday on a visit to her daughter, Mrs Percy Wright (Christehureh). Mr and Mrs F. I. Washbourn and family (Beverley road) left on Sunday for Nelson. Miss Doris Ronaldson (Christehureh). who was the guest of Mrs A. Grant (Wai-iti road), left yesterday for Oamaru. Mrs E. Richardson and Mrs James Hay (England) returned from Christchurch yesterdav, and will be the guests o'f Mr and Mrs H. A. le Cren (Fairlie) for Christmas. The Weather. The weather conditions have been very changeable and unsettled during the past forty-eight hours. A light rain fell on Sunday evening for an hour or two, the rain gauge at the park registering four points. The sky cleared later on, and yesterday morning broke fine and clear, but the sky again became 'overcast about midday. A few drops of rain fell during the afternoon, and last night the appearance of the sky was very threatening. Bowling. The Soutli Canterbury Bowling Centre's champion finks competition and shield matches are now well under way, the fourth round having been completed. Kia Toa Club leads in the champion rinks with 9-A points, Timaru and West End being equal with 7* points each, and Park next with five points. In the shield competition, section A, the places are as follows:—Waimate 13* points, Kia Toa A 10J, Temuka 9, Timaru A 6, Ashbury C, West End 5. tn section B Park leads with 9A points, other totals being: West End 8, Timaru B 7J, Geraldine 7, Kia Toa B 2. GERALDINE. Weather conditions continue stormy. On Sunday evening between five and six a thunderstorm passed over the district and was severely felt in the vicinity of the hills and Kangitata. At Anderson's corner the rain came down in a pefeet deluge, flooding the country and damaging root and other crops, while at Orari Gorge 88 points of ruin were registered in about an hour and a-half. In Geraldine town there was a good shower and distant thunder was heard. Yeßterday afternoon the clouds had again gathered arid looked most ominous, and farmers were fearing hail. Again there was an electrical storm nearer the hills, with very heavy rain in places. Just after midnight on Saturday the Borough Council stables in Talbot street were found to be on fire. The horses had been turned out in a paddock, but a couple of drays and some harness were got out of the burning building. Members of the Fire Brigade who were present soon got a lead of water on to the fire and though the interior of the building was destroyed the walls and the roof were left standing. WOODBURY. On Friday the scholars of the Woodbury School were taken to the Waihi Gorge for their annual picnic and prizegiving. The committee had made complete arrangements, and the outing proved most enjoyable. After lunch, which was supplied by the committee, a splendid programme of sports was carried out, embracing races of all kinds, and the children spent two very happy hours. Mr J. Fifield (chairman of the the Committee) then presented the prizes, each child receiving a book. Mr Flatman's special prize for merit was awarded to Moira McFadgen, and MiMcGregor's prize for progress was won by Norman Mcintosh. Mrs J. M. Baker's sewing prize was won by Sheila McFadgen (Standard 5), the other sewing prizes being awarded as fol-lows:—-Standard 4, Mabel Webb; Standard 3, Gwen Heney; Standard 2, Kathleen McDonald; Standard 1, Molly McKeown. Prizes for woodwork were awarded to Kandall Fergusson and Norman Mcintosh. The following gained attendance prizes and certificates:—Sheila and Moira McFadgen, Duleie Mcintosh, David Fifield, Lorna McFadgen, Euby and Harry Mcintosh, Dick and Grace Baker, and . Seddon Cooling. Mr Fifield called for three hearty cheers for the teachers, the children responding heartily. Mrs S. Cain (Christehureh) is staying in Woodbury with her daughter, Mrs Marks. Miss B. Ballantyne, who spent the week-end at Woodbury, has left for her home in Oamaru. Miss Evelyn Hutton, who has been spending a holiday in Woodbury, has returned to Christehureh. TEMUKA. The annual entertainment of St. Joseph's Convent School, Temuka, was held in the Dominion Theatre, Temuka, on Friday evening. There was a very large attendance. The programme was an excellent one, and the audience .'ave unstinted applause. The following was the programme: —Instrumental trio Misses Caiiemier, Coombs, Keys, Barron. M. Sheen; song, junior girls: instrumental duet, Misses Edna and Eileen McGarva, dark, Sbeen. P. Story, and Leathern: song, boys; dance. Eileen MoGarva, P. Dwau, P. Story, D. Sheen; vocal solo, M. G. South; piano solo, Miss Newman; waxworks show, pupils; Sea* Truibhas, Miss Kichardsou; part song, girls; drama. Blind Obedience, W. Story, J. Spillane, W. Small, L. Gillum, E. Wheeler, P. O'Regan, P. Mangin, Jas. Spillane, T. Downes, \V. and L. Crannitch; finale, "United New Zealand," pupils. The accompaniment were played by Miss Newman. On Friday the Mayor (Mr T. Gunnion) and Councillors D. Mclnness' and W F. Evans waited on ex-Mayor Alexander Frew and presented him with a Loewe pipe to mark the occasion of his 81st birthday. The Mayor, '-n making the presentation, referred to the fine public career of Mr- Frew, and said that although he was now on the retired list, the Borough Council and burgesses did not forget fiis splendid ser(vices to the town, and everyone cordi-

Mr tYew thanked the speakers for their kindness, and congratulated the Borough Council on the progressive work tliey were doing. Although not on the active list he still took an interest in the work.
