WAIMAKARIRI HARBOUR BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. The quarterly meeting of the Waimakariri Harbour Board was held at Kaiapoi yesterday. -Present: Messrs H. 0. Revell, j. Fleming, 3..3. Matthews, T.R. lieithead, W. A. Bowse, T. Stevenson, H. M. Anderson, and L. B. Evans. Messrs J. 3. Matthews and 'l>. B. Evans were nominated lor the position, of chairman for the ensuing year. On a 'ballot being taken, Mr Matthews was declared elected, the voting being 5 votes to 2. Mr Matthews, in thanking members for his election, reviewed ttje work of the Board, during the past year, and welcomed the new member representing the Rangiora Borough (Mr W. A. Rowse). He also extended the thanks of the Board to Mr H. M. Anderson, the retiring chairman, for the interest lie had taken in' harbour matters. The following committees were elected:— Finance. —The chairman, Messrs Evans and ljeithead. Works. —The chairman and Messrs Revell and 'Evans. Reserves. —The Board as a whole. The harbourmaster reported that during the first week in June heavy south-easterly seas had washed a good .deal of the north spit away,' ,and also the south spit. On •Tune 11th a high tide and heavy sea from the south-east had broken across the sandhills and filled up the entire fiat at the back of Kairaki. Curing the last, three months there had been five or six freshes down the river, two of which ran very swiftly, taking the north spit completely away. He had experienced considerable difficulty in keeping the bar beacons in place. At present the bar was good, and the tides were satisfactory. . Bar soundings ' showed:— April 25th, 10ft 6in; May 16th, 9ft; July 12th, 9ft; July 15th, 9ft. The report was adopted. It was resolved .that the Works Committee should have power to act in connexion with steamers working the river, ftnd repairs needed to the Harbour Board properties. It was decided that arrangements should be made if possible for.a ciause to be inserted in the Washing-Up Bill of the present sitting of Parliament to validate .the payment by local bodies in the harbour district of the expenses as fixed by the Com-, missioner incurred in connexion with the larger harbour area. The removal of piles at the half-tide wall was referred to the-Works Committee with power-to act. The' financial statement showed: —Receipts since last meeting, £142 5s 6d; debit bank balance, *£lß7 lis 7d.
