PERSONAL. Mr*F.' A. Grant, commercial agent; New. Zealand Railways, is-i on a. business yisit > to Ashburton. : General News. The weekly meeting of the Catholic Club was held on Wednesday. The .programme took the form of ten-minute speeches on men of note in history. The judges were Messrs M. J. Burgess and F. K. Cooper, who announced a draw between Messrs L. T. J. Ryan and H. Liennon. A club, supporter has given a trophy, for a similar contest, and this will be held at an early date. On Wednesday next a card match will be played with St. Stephen's Club. The building trade in Ashburton is reported to. be much brighter than it was at this time last year. All the builders seem to have a fair amount of w;ork in hand, and a number of houses are going up in ' the borough. ' One builder, replying to a question, said he did not anticipate that the cost of building would come' down any further. : The new telephone ' exchange , at Springburn will be officially opened this afternoon. Among those' expected to be present are the chief postmaster," Chrwtchurch (Mr J. E. Broadfoot), the Ashburton postmaster (Mr j. Mulvey), and Messrs McDevitt and Pike, of the engineering branch. The. Postmaster-General (the Hon. J. G. Coates) has been asked to attend, but on account of Parliamentary duties is not-likely to come south. Representatives of the local bodies in the county have, also been invited to be present. Football. To-morrow two matches will be played iaa the Ashburton Football Association's competitions, when Ashburton Wanderers A will journey to Methven to meet Methven, and Wanderers B will meet Wakanui at Wakanui. A selector of the Association will attend each game, and- teams will'be- selected• " for r the Probables v. Possibles match, which "will take place at Ashburton Domain the following Saturday. 'Mr A. Cornish, "of Longbeach, an old Canterbury and New Zealand representative,: has .been asked to control the game and' offer a little coaching to the county which will meet a 'team' from" Christchurch" at Methven on August, 2nd. The following teams will ' represent Wanderers: in their matches against Methven and Wakanui. A Team —Hardy, W. Anderson, Pearson, Boss, Beauvais, - Nieholls, Johnston, Walls, Thompson, Mulvey, jun., Neilsen. . B Team—Cairns, Knight,. Anderson, i Mason, J. McElhinney, H. Mulvey, H. Moody, Shaw, K.
