SAFE BLOWN OPEN BY BURGLARS.
SMART ARREST BY POLICE,
(FBBS3 ASSOCIATION TELSOBAU.) AUCKLAND,. Juno 16. Burglars entered the offices of the Avondale railway station on Saturday night, blew open tho safe with gelignite, and stole Saturday's takings, about £SO, mostly in silver coin. The manner in which the explosive wae used indicated that the burglars possessed some skill. One-half of the strong-room door was blown off. At the Magistrate's Court tins morning, Edmund Edwin Rodburne Luttrill, aged 35, was charged at the Police Court with breaking and entering the counting-house of the Avondale railway station and stealing £56 12s 4d, the property of the Government Railways. Accused was remanded without Detectives Cummmgs, Robertson ana Moon ascertained that accused was in possession of more money than in ordinary circumstances. Luttrill found them sitting on his bed when lie entered his room in a Queen street Hotel. An examination made in his presence disclosed. money alleged to be part or that stolen from Avondale, and other identifiable property taken from the safe'. Loose cartridges and a catalogue detailing the working of the electric burglar alarm system were also found on him. , , Mr J. W. Poyntqn, S.M., remarked that these responsible for the smart arrest should bo congratulated.
PALMERSTON NORTH ATTEMPT. PALMERSTON N., June IC. An unsuccessful attempt was made last night to blow open a safe in the office of a local bacon company. The lock was damageu, but was not forced. The safe contained no money, the proceeds having been banked on Saturday.
