CITY COUNCIL.
LAST NIGHT'S MEETING.
The Christchurch City Council met last night. Present: The DeputyMayor (Cr. A. McKellar), and Crs A. Williams, J. W. Beanland, E. H. Andrews, O. W. B. Anderson, A. W. Beaven, W. E. Leadley, J.. K. Archer, E. McCombs, Y. R. Cooke, E. J. Howard, M.P., and H. T. Armstrong, M.P. Leave of absence was granted tne Mavor (Mr J. A. Flosher'. and Crs. W. H. Winsor, J. Anderson, and C. tarr. A petition from G. Mazey and others, submitting proposals for tho improvement of Fitzgerald avenue, was referred to the Works Committee. Correspondence. The Port Christchurch League wrote congratulating the Council upon its action in adopting the suggestion that it should promote a Bill providing for inereased representation on tho J-fjt-telton Harbour Board. The League offered to give the Council every assistance in its power. The Council was informed that tiie city solicitor had the preparation of the Bill in hand. . . A letter from tho Christehurcu >irrigation and Trading Syndicate, enclosing a copv of a letter sent to tho_ Minister of Marine applying for permission to construct a wharf or jetty at a suitable location along the bank 0.. the Heathcote estuary, and aski'ig if the syndicate would be permitted to wake a" small lew to recoup any outlay incurred, particularly in regard U shipping, other than th/it in which dicate is interested, using the w.iar*,, was received. Finance. Tho financial statement showed:— General rate levied £113,597, collected £111,456, outstanding £2141. The district fund account was £60,500 m debit (current account _ dr. £15,014, temporary loans dr. £45,490). Electricity Committee. The Electricity Committee reported that members made a tour of inspection of street lighting on the evening of Thursday, the sth inst. The localities where various applications had been made for increased lighting were viewed under night conditions, and, as a result of the observations made, the committee recommended that 12 additional lamps be erected in various localities. With reference to the general lighting of Papanui, Bromley, and Woolston, the engineer had been instructed by the committee to furnish a report covering the cost of bringing the lighting in these areas up to the same standard of lighting as obtains in the city area. The report was adopted. Abattoirs Committee. The tender of Messrs P. and D. Duncan of £ll 10s each for offal trucks for the abattoir was accepted.
