% Dance. | In spite of the warm weather on | Thursday, a large number of j dancers J attended the fancy dress d r c®cp in aid of the funds of the Sunftier Tennis Club. The hall was decorated 1 with streamers of orange paper, and toi-tois, and flas, tho many attractive fanoy costumes worn all helping to add a general air of brightness to the scene. Sutherland's jazz band provided the music, and a dainty supper was given by the ladies. Kindergarten. During the week, Miss E. Pender he'd a most enjoyable children's party for the break in g-up of her kindergarten. Prises were distributed to all the children, who spent a happy time playing games, etc. A special prize for writmg, presented! by Mrs It. A. Row, was awarded to Florence Cannon. Mayoral Greetings. (Before the .close of the last of the Council meetings held' for this year, the Mayor (the. Hon. J. Barr, M.L.0.), in a neat little speech, complimented the councillors on tbeir services, and wished them the season's greetings. Cr. Whitfield, on behalf of the councillors, thanked his Worship for his ldnd remarks, and! wished him a Merry Christmas and Prosperous New' Year. The Kannerdale Men. Last week the scholars of the Sumner School gave an exhibition of school work, with the object of (securing funds for a Christmas box for the Rannerdale men. The function was a great success. For several days, with plasticine, cardboard, coloured apaper, paint box, a,nd pen, elate and pencils, the classes vied with each other m dbing their beat. Selecting their own subject, alone or in team, work, they laid their plans, and the result astonished all who saw it. The colour work, "modelling, sewing, writing, and hand-made Christmas cards were much admired, while the model of the playground and buildings, and hand-made toys were only some of the items that surprised 1 even the children's own parents. Thr- exhibition was open two nights, and the collections at the door were entirely satisfactory. On Thursday afternoon the girls of Standard VI. ran a class -bazaar for the same object. The following wers tho stallholders : Produce, Lynda Powe and Mnrjorie Duncan; fancy stall, Molly Cndle and Rita Allen; sweets, Ettie Barber, ,Mnvis Peek, and Frances Boulton; drinks. Hazel Petersen and Gwen Mogridge. The articles on th& stalls were the work of the girls, and; reflected great credit on their efforts. Life-Saving. A committee meeting of the club was held on Thursday evening, when Mr H. Buttle presided. The .secretary reported that the club team had secured second place in the ICesteven Cup competition. The report of the opening day function . showed that the event had been an entire success and that the results had exceeded expectations, ahearty vote of thanks was accQrded the ladies and all who had worked hard to make the opening a success. The treasurer's statement showed that the net result of the function would be approximately £65. The credit balance at the bank was £29. Eleven new members were elected. It was decided to make enquiries concerning the cos? of placing an electric alarm in the pavilion. Mr Booth reported that he had secured Wo new lines for the reels. It was decided' to suggest Saturday, 17th

February, as a suitable date for tae Sumner Oup (three man) competition, and to suggest the same date for the inter-borough contest with New Brighton. The discussion of the improvement of the ladies' accommodation wafl deferred until next meeting. Xiocal Athletics. On Wednesday evening the senior athletic team honoured' Mr P. Dick at the! Town Hall at the conclusion of the prize-giving ceremony. Mr C. L. Allen, who represented the team, in a neat and humorous speech, asked Mr Dick to accept a case of razors and a shavjng outfit as a mark of the high esteem in which he was held by those he had trained. Starting some four years <-go with about four, the team had increased this year to thirty members. Last year the school boys were runners-up lor the championship shield, and this year they. had won "it. The succ j&ses this year also included 35 firsts, iio seconds, and eight thirds. Mr Dick* had worked hard in the early and gallons of embrocation and mw had been used. He had much pleasure in asldng the trainer to accept the gut and_ the team's good l wishea for the coming year. Mr Dick was greeted with prolonged and vigorous cheers. He said that all the credit lay with the boys who had given their minds to their work. Those in Standard VI. had all passed, and he was proud of them. He would always be pleased to place his services at the disposal of the borough for similar purposes.
