ANNUAL MEETING.

The annual meeting of the Canter- : bury Philosophical Institute, was held last night, Mr A. M. Wright presiding over, a ; large attendance.

The diamond jubilee of the Institute had been, celebrated by a conversazione held on April sth. The Government decided early in the year that research grants would be discontinued, for .the present, consequently there -had been no lapplioauoiis i<>r grants from members. A most valuable addition had been made to the library by the purchase of .a complete set oi the'.'.-Annals du Jardin Botanique "de Buiteitrerg. The i; n;tute had begun, to exchange with the library of tne University of Minnesota, and with the director of the Jardin Botanique de Buitehzorg, Java. : The balance-sheet showed that t'ue total; receipts, including a balance of £264 18s 6d, amounted to £616 18s Hd. The total expenditure on the library was £175 7ssd.

The report and balance-sheet were adopted. ... The following officers were elected: President, Dr. F. W. Hilgendorf; vicepresidents, Messrs A! M. Wr.ieh.t- and M. H: Godby; hon. secretary, Mr C.E. Fowerakerj hoh. treasurer, Dr. Chas. Chilton; hon. librarian, Miss E. M. Herriott; hon. auditor, Mr J. G. Jameson; council, Messrs G. E. Archey, A. D: Dobson, L. P. Symes, F,. G. Hoggj.Dr. C. Farr, and Bev. Dr.■'fiolls-▼ay-.V^'r.•;.-''.',-: . The 5 president expressed the -Institute's thanks to Mr G. E.
