SHORTAGE OF PAPER.
A "WEST COAST SUGGESTION. (press association teLegram.) HOKITIKA, June 2. The "Westland Chamber of Commerce resolved, in view of tho paper shortage, to invite the Government to disclose its policy regarding the establishment of a paper manufactory, or to indicate what facilities might btf given, by way of subsidy and rights, to enable private enterprise to take up- the project on the West Coast. Largo tracts of country carry timber which is considered suitable for paper-making, and they are adjacent to water-power, which could be harnessed for working paper mills. A CANADIAN MERGER. ' OTTAWA, May 31. A 60,000,000 dollar paper merger is foreshadowed by the amalgamation of W. C. Edwards and Co. with the Gil-mour-Hughson Company. They will ' control 12,000 square miles of timber; Jand, with an output of 150,000 tons of paper annually. .
