SUPPLY OF GAS.
A TEMPORARY RELIEF.
The Christchurch Gas Company was able to continue the supply of gas to the consumers yesterday, and arrangements were made for drawing emergency stocks of coal from the railway yards at Linwood, but the outlook is still far from bright, and strict economy in the use of gas is essential. The company- succeeded in securing 250 tons of coal from the Government yesterday afternoon, and the gas supply is assured until to-morrow morning, when the amount of coal actually available at Lyttelton will be known. The Canopus commenced to discharge her cargo of 1700 tons of coal on Tuesday. Only 100 tons of this is for the Gas Company, the bulk of the cargo, going to the Westport Coal Company's depot at Christchurch. Freezing works and other essential industries are receiving a portion. The Karori is discharging about 2300 tons, 320 of which is for the Gas Company. The Ngakuta is duo to-day from Greymouth, but it is not yet known how her cargo of about 2000 tons will bo apportioned.
