MEETINGS AND SOCIALS.
BECKENIIAM RESIDENTS' ASSOCIATION. The monthly meeting of the Beckenham Residents' Association wad hold on Tuesday evening in Mr Peek's hall. Mr McAlister presided. Spccial reference was made to irrivatea Oatos and Goodali, who have fallen in action in Prance, also to Li-ut.-Col. Charters, who has been wounded and gassed. Strong exception was taken to the attitude of certain councillors und private parties holding up the completion of the Tennyson street drain, which is in a filthy condition and a source of danger to the residents, and it was decidedto send a letter of appreciation to Cr. Beanland for the manner in which he endcavouied to protect the interests of tho ratepayers when the matter was discussed by the Drainage Board. WHARENUI SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The Wharenui School Committee met on. ■ Wednesday. Present —Messrs T. Haberfield (chairman), Bates, Mahony, McLean, and. White. Apologies for absence were accepted from Messrs Bradnock, Burgess, and Stokes. Owing to insufficient funds, sundry accounts were held over until next meeting. The headmaster reported the roll number to be 384, and tho average attendance 330. An invitation by circular from the Director of Education, asking the committee to assist the Government by purchasing War Loan certificates, and suggesting that funds for this purpose be raised by the scholars collecting I rage, bones, and bottles, was indignantly j refused. In connexion with the ground im- ! provemenfc scheme it was decided to obtain i an estimate for the erection of an outdoor teaching shelter. A motion to unveil the Roll of Honours Board on. Saturday, November 34th, at 3 p.m., was agreed _ to. In this connexion, it was decided to invito Mr G. Witty, M.P., the Mayor and councillors of the Riccarton Borough Council, the chairman and members of tho Waim&iri County Council, the headmaster and staff of the school, also the parents and residents of the district, to be present. A motion of sympathy with Mr and Mrs Henery and family in tho loss of their son and brother, who was killed in action, was passed in silence. Messrs T. Stokes and A. Staunton were appointed a visiting committee.
