THE FEDERAL ELECTIONS.
NATIONALIST POSITION STRENGTHENED. P.L.L. LEADERS SURPRISED. (By Cirble—Preas Aaflociation—Copyright.? SYDNEY, May 3. Later figures eontinuo to strengthen the Nationalists' position, both us regards the Senate and the House of Representatives. As far as Now South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia, South Australia, and Tasmania aro concerned, the position of tho leading candidates for tho Senate is such as to make Nationalist victories practically sure, though th' counts are far from complete, and iiv elude a wry big untouched absente< vote. Several scats in the House of Representatives, whicli were previously doubtful, now appear likely to.go to the Nationalists. Tho P.L.L. leaders express great surprise at tho result and attribute it to the plenitude of funds which tho National Party commanded. Tho reply to thi R is that tho Liberal Party always had raoro funds than the Labour, yet the latter was previously able to win. Tho newspapers claim that Saturday's vote, and not tho Conscription Referendum, was tho true expression ot the Commonwealth's opinion on ihe war, and that it has rehabilitated Australia in the eyes of the Empire.
