WAIMAKARIRI HARBOUR BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. Tho first meeting of the newly clccted Waimakariri Harbour Board was held laat night. Present —Messrs W. Doubleday, J. jW. Barnard, J. H. Keay, Jj. C. Evans, A. Wright. J. Mcintosh, It. j. Corbett, L. Edmonds, anr T. Keetley. r ' Mr Doubleday was re-elected chairman, and welcomed tho new members—Messrs jßeay and Corbett —to th© Board. The following committees were elected: — Finance —Messrs Evans, Barnard, and Corbett. Works—Messrs Mclntoah, "Wright, Edmunds, and Iteay. Reserves—The Board as a whole. Tho annual balace-sheet was received and adopted. A letter was received from the Public Trust Offico reporting the total of the Board's einking fund in December last as being £164 IGs vd. A motion of appreciation of the services rendered the Board by Moists B. Lissamaai and H. C. Kevel, the retiring members, was carried. A letter was received from the Wairau Harbour Board, Blenheim, enquiring with a view to purchasing the Board's suction dredge.—To be informed that tho dredge was not for ealo at present. The # harbourmaster reported that the depth of water on tho bar was from 7ft 9in to Sft. Since last report tho bar had shifted about fivo chains further south. Soundings below Kairaki at high water showed 7ft Gin to Bft. The old signal staff on the south side of the river had collapsed, and he would suggest moving tho loose gear, to the north side of the river. Tho report was adopted, th« removal of the gear from the signal staff being left in the hands of the Works Committee. A deputation representing tenants of Hampton's buildings waited on tho Board with reference to the installation of electric light. It was decided that tho tenants should be asked to install th<> light themselves on the understanding that should they leave within fivo years, tho Board would take tho fittings over at a valuation. In the event of the Borough Council requiring guarantees, the Finance Committee were empowered to deal with the matter.
The chairman reporter! that tho Harbour Empowering Bill was incomplete, and unworkable, and urgtu the receeeity of revising it before Parliament met in June. It was resolved "to discuss tho matter at a special meeting to bo held next Monday. The financial statement for tli© month showed receipts £18 13s "kl, overdraft £138 18s 4d, and accounts for payment £19 lis 7d.
