AMBERLEY QUEEN CARNIVAL.
SfCCESSFUL RED CROSS EFFORT
The culmination of the Bed Cross effort in aid of the. Amberley branch of the Red Cross Society took pi are on Saturday in the Domain, when a successful garden party and fete was held, and the Queen Carnival brought- to a termination. The weather was kind, and there, was a fairly largo attendance of residents from all parts of the district, who took part in the afternoon's proceedings with considerable enthusiasm. The convenient and picturesque | domain lent itself naturally to an affair ! of this description, and the efforts of a very large number of energetic helpers of both sexes carried" all the arrangements through in very commendable fashion. As is usual at. a gathering of this nature elaborate preparations had been made to gather in all the cash possib'u from patrous, and a. large number of well-appointed stalls were in evidence, ! a-s well as the side-shows, which provided an added attraction. The stalls, etc., and those in charge of them, were las follows: Drapery (.Mesdames Tlolton, Parnham, and Fairwea then, flowers j nnrl produce (Mesdanics Milner, Mason, land Spenccr), sweets (Miss Hale). ! Christmas free (Miss M. Parsons), bran 1 tub iMrs "Williams), fish pond (Misses Hadler and Knowlcs), ice cream (Miss Marsh), children's tent (Miss Busch), j shooting gallery (Mr N. Frew), lioop-!a. '(Messrs .1. H. "Watson and J. Harrison). "Kill the Kaiser" (Mr F. | Adams). There -were three candidates for the honour of being Queen of the Carnival, and considerable interest was taken 111 tile voting, the rivalry between the districts represented being keen. The candidates were; No. 1, Bracken field (Molly Watson), green ; Xo. 3, Amberlev (Jean Deighton), pink); iXo. 2, Pirbomfield (Rata McLean), blue; and for the greater part of the afternoon the flags of the Queens flew in the order as above, though towards the time of the closing of the ballot, there was much fluctuation in the positions.
Besides tho attractions of the stalls nnd sido-show6, there -was a lengthy snorts programme decided. which inrluded all kinds of amusing novelty events, as well as competitions for children's doconvted vehicles, a baby show, and a general hunt, for a lively and particularly greasy pig. , The ooemng ceremony was performed by Mr G. T>. Greenwood, of TeviotdaJe. who in his speech drew particular attention to the olijcct of the gathering. In his opinion there was no more, deserving war fund to which anyone could contribute than that of the Red Cross. The neod in the -past had been great, but the probability was that tho need in the future would be more urgent still, as doubtless there would bo more stiff nghiing before the Allies stood victorious. Tfo alluded to the great founder of the .Army Nursing Scrv-.c-e nnd Red Cross work generally. Miss Florence Nightingale, and described hnw her noMe ;nui merciful work had developed pincc the dark days of the Crimean war.
Shortly before 4 p.m. tho results were announced, and the Broomfield Oucen was. declared the winner, the total sum to her credit being £136 7s. The Brnckenfiold Queen was second with £'132 Os Pd. and the Amberley representative third with £99 6s. a grand total of £36" 13s Pd. This sum does not represent the total proceeds of the carnival, ami it is hoped that not far >' ,n rt of £000 will be the ultimate result.
I lie crowning ccremony. for the biicce=s ot which great credit is due to Mi?-; McNaughv, was performed by Mr (I. D. Greenwood, who made the necessary speeches with great effect. 'The cercmouy was practically a rcplica ut
th»h which took place in Ohristchiirch, adults being replaced In- children as the chief artors in the pageant. It iva.s very well dono indor'l, and tho pretty sight, was loudly cheered l>v the spectators.
