ROLL OF HONOUR UNVEILED,

The ceremony of tinvcflmg a RoU. of Honour at tie Opawa school took place on Saturday afternoon, in the presence of a large number of children, friends, and old boys of the school. Tho chairman of tho School Committee, Mr R. H'J'urncr, presided, and, amongst those present wero Mr J. • Jamieson, . representing the Canterbury 'Education Board; Mr H. C. Lane, secretary of the Board, and Mr George Scott, The .chairman, in a brief speech, spoke of the magnitude _ of tbß wax - , and. -±ho heroic.'- - -deeds

performed ■ by Xew Zealand sons. From the Opawa school, there w°rr-"Lieutenant-Colonel Charters, who had been created a C.M.G., Major H. Hurst, who hail won the D.5.0., suul Private A. Thompson, who had been awarded the Military Medal, while se\tira.l old boy s had made the supreme sacrifice. The Honours Board had been presented t/< the school by two ladies, Mcsdames • ('• Tisch Md J. Mr Jamieson first addressed a few remarks to the boys, pointing out to them that thev were, tho reinforcements to fill tho" gaps ill society caused by the deaths of old bov.s who had brought honour to the school and to its children. He hoped that the. war would not last very long, but all could rest assured that when peace came, it would be "rtcacc with honour." Mr" .Jamieson then unveiled the Roll, the school buglers playing a general salute. In asking Mr H. C. Lane to speak, tho chairman expressed the hope that the. School Committee's long-standing patience would soon be rewarded by tho erection of a new school at Opawa. Ho. had received the assurance that Opawa's turn was not far distant. Mr H. C. I jane briefly expressed his pleasure at being present at the function. and spoke of the good feeling which had alwavs existed between the. F/dueation Board and the- Opawa School Committee. Tho headmaster. Mr Collee, also briefly addressed the gathering, and read a letter of congratulation from Private H. .J- Jenkins, of the Samoa forces, and one of the original pupils at the •school when it was opened in the early seventies. Mr Collee remarked that ho had noticed that many men at the front had received their carlv military training under tho junior cadet system, and it. was in many ways a pity that that system had gone.. The singing of the National Anthem brought a successful function to a conclusion.
