Truby King is granted the honorary rank "of major iu tho New Zealand Medical Corps during the war. Mr A. P. Lucas has retired lrom the conductorship of St. John's Church, Nelson, after thirty years' honorary scrvice. Mr 11. S. Moss, of Carterton, has appointed secretary of the Harcke's Bay Jockey Club, in succession to Mr AY. j. Stratton, resigned. Captain Conrad Sax by, v.lio left New Zealand with the Sixth Reinforcements, has been promoted to tho rank of Major, Major Saxby is at present "somewhere in France." Mr J. J. Fitzgerald, clerk in the Timaru Magistrate's Court office, has boon transferred to the Temuka. office. Mr J. T. A. Beaumont, of Christchurch, has replaced him. Tho appointment to the command of tho Canterbury Military District granted Colonel R. A. Ciiaft'ey, Y.D., has been extended to during the period of the war. Mr E. A. Marchaut, civil engineer, of Wanganui, who entered the N.C.O. training camp a few months ago, has been commissioned as a lieutenant in tho New Zealand Engineers. Mr C. H. Hobbs, who has been Hawke's Bay representative of the Ivaiapoi Woollen Co. for a considerable time past, has received notice of his promotion to the company's Duncdin branch. Mr T. Stapieton, of Fairfield avenue, recently received a cable messago from his son, Mr J. A. Stapieton, of the Sixth Reinforcements, stating ho had been discharged from hospital in Egypt and had rejoined the forces. Mr E. H. Hughes, of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company's staff, who has been seriously ill i'or some time past, was removed yesterday to the Lewisham Hospital, where lie is to undergo an operation to-day. District Lands Registrar, Bleuhcmi, -who lias been promoted to lnverearsill, was last week presented, on behalf of the Law Society, with a purse of sovereigns, and by the Civil Scrvice with a case of pipes and a silver matchbox. Dean MeKenna, who went home some months ago for health reasons, has been under treatment by a Glasgow specialist, and it is understood lias completely recovered. He expects to return to New Plymouth towards the end of the year. Mr Harokl Beauchamp, of the firm of Messrs Uannatyne and Co., Wellington, and chairman of directors of tho Bank of Ntrvv Zealand, will leave on a trip to Canada and the United States of America shortly. Mr Beauchamp contemplates being a way from New Zealand for five months. The death occurred at tho Napier j Hospital on Thursday morning of Sister Mary Candide, of St. Joseph's Coni vent. Deceased underwent an operation for appendicitis at the Hospital on the previous Saturday. Tho late sister, who was thirty years of asze was the daughter of Mr and Mrs Jones, of Hamilton. Mr Walter Rogers, sou of Captain W. J. Rogers, of the Blackball Co.'s Wellington staff, has been appointed chief' engineer of the Australian gunboat Nusa, employed as guarclship for New Guinea and adjacent islands. Mr Rogers served as a junior engineer in tho Blackball Co.'s boats, and then went into the China trade.

Corporal "\V. J. Cooksley (wounded) is the eldest son of Mr "\\*. 11. Cooksley, of Clarendon terrace, "Woolston. He enlisted in the 6th llcinforceinents, and saw service in Egypt and Gallipoli. He was educated at trie Main School and Higli School, Timaru. and, after coming to Christchurch, lie was engaged with Messrs F. Cross and Sons for two years before his enlistment., One of Corporal Cooksley's brothers onlisted in the Main Body, and his other brother offered his services with the same force. Lance-Corporal Melville Mirfin, of the New Zealand Medical Corps, who was mentioned by General Glodley for gallantry iti saving life when the Marquette was sunk on its way to Salonica, was formerly on the staff of the Bank of 2\ew South Wales in Greymouth. Whon war broke out he went to Samoa with the Medical Corps. Returning sonic months after, ho again enlisted, and went out with tho No. 1 Stationary Hospital Staff. When the Marquette was sunk -Mirfin was one of the lastto leave her, having to dive as she went under. The death occurred at Wellington on Thursday of Mr Walter Joseph Price, second son of Mr Harry Price, proprietor of Warner's Hotel, Christchurch, formerly of Wellington. The deceased, who was thirty-six years of ago. and Uhmarried, was a native of Wellington, and was educated at the Mount Cook Boys' School and St. Patrick's College. For the past five years he had been a sufferer from tubercular trouble following an attack of double pneumonia. He was eonnccted with the building trade. In his younger days he belonged to tho Oriental Football Club. Lieut. Max Juriss, of the "King's Own," who is reported missing in France since May 22nd, was formerly sergeant-instructor in tho Defence Department in Wellington. Hi s mother is a resident ol' Spreydon, and his wife resides at Hataitai (Wellington). Lieut. Juriss is a brother of Mr Harry Juriss, of Wellington. After leaving the Defence 1 * Department he conducted a physical training school, in Wellington, but more recently undertook other work. He tried in vain to obtain a commission i:x the local forces, and eventually paid his own faro to England, where he was at once given a commission owing to his soldierly qualities and military knowledge. The death occurred in Christchurch on Friday of Mr Cnarles Milton Price, an officer of the Post and Telegraph Department, wlio was very woil known throughout New Zealand. He was born in Piet-or. years ago, and. after leaving school, .joined the telegraph ser- : vice, in which he became one of the most expert operators in tiio Dominion. He was stationed for some years in Wellington, and tlien transferred to the postal ! branch of the Department. He was j chief clerk of the Lytrelton office for 1 about four years, and from there he went to the. Gisborne oiiicc as chief . clerk. The late Mr Price, who was very popular in the ■Department, leaves a widowed mother, who is now resident in Wanganui. His brother. Mr Keuben Price, is postmaster at Takaka, Nelson. The late Mr j Price was an enthusiastic member of tho Masonic Craft, and had been for many years a member of Lodge New Zealand PaciSc, Wellington. The funeral yesterday, at Linwood, was- attended £? the hoads and several members of the local IXK" and telegraph office staff, and prominent members of tho Masonic fraternity. The burial was conducted by the Rev. P. J. Cocks. >
