Another official statement says:—"A battle at Shavli ended in our favour. The Russians lost, heavily and retreated to Mitau, after setting fire to Shavli. AVo took a thousand prisoners and ten machine-guns. "The Russians attacked a German advance company at Kalvaria at night, inflicting much damage." [Shavli is in the Baltic Province of Kovno, and lies 70 miles from the East Prussian frontier, between the Niemen and Riga. It lie s on the railway line from Libau to Kovno and DunaburjKalvaria is north-north-east of Suwalki.]
