ENEMY'S ADVANCE-GUARDS

RUSSIAN SUCCESSES IN THE
CARPATHIANS
PETROGRAD, May 1. An official statement says:—'"'We closely pressed tlio German advanceguards on the whole front westwards of the Niemeii. Wβ repulsed the enemy in the Sosbia region near Osoweitz, with heavy losses. Wβ repulsed four attacks at Tednovojevtz, between the Pissa and the Skva rivers (near the frontier north-east of Warsaw), with very great German losses. "We allowed the Austrians to approach our wire entanglements in the Kopolovetz Forest, north of the UszoTi Pass, on Wednesday night,. and 6uddenly scattered them with a devastating fire. "We vigorously .advanced to the enemy's trenches in the Golovetzko region, in the direction of Stryi, and bayoneted a portion of the defenders. AYe captured four thousand men." Another official statement &ays: — "Our successful advance on the left, bank of the Niemen continues. The enemy suffered further severe losses. "Wβ carried two hills southward of Kozinka and Golovetzko (in Galicia), taking a thousand prisoners and several quick-firers. "Our offensive continues successfully. We repulsed German, attacks in the direction of the Wyskow Pass." . The High Commissioner reports:— LONDON, May Ist 01-30 a.m.). On Wednesday evening, near Osowietz, an attack on Sosbia village was repulsed witli heavy losses to the enemy. Several other barren enemy attacks were made'in North. Poland wilE great losses. . • The same occurred in West Poland, in Galicia. and in the Carpathians. In; the direction of Stryi, in the region of Golovetzko, near Koziowa, the Russians took the offensive and pushed forward vigorously to the trenches of the enemy. Part of the defenders were bayoneted, and the Russians took" four thousand prisoners, including seven officers.
