RUSSIAN VIEW OF THE INVASION.
PETROGRAD, May 1. The new German activity north of the Niemen is believed to bo merely a demonstration # connected with probable movements of tho German fleet, covering the landing of troops in the Polangen district. Hitherto Germany has attached no importance to the Baltic provinces, but is now seeking a fresh offensive in this direction, in view of her failure on the Warsaw-Niemen line. Germany .also hopes to exrert a moral influence on neutral neighbours. A FORAGING EXPEDITION. (Received May 3rd. 12.10 a.m.) PETROGRAD, May 2. Official circles describe the German offensive at Shavli as a foraging expedition, and predict that the only result will be the acquisition of an insignificant amount of food and fodder.
