FIRES.
At eleven o'clock on Thursday night a twelve-roomed two-storey dwelling ih Waimairi road, Upper Riccarton, was completely destroyed by lire. The origin of tbe outbreak i_ not known. The premises belonged to the Ballantyne Estate, and were occupied by Messrs Clark. Tho building was insured in tho London and Lancashire offico for £700, and Mc-srs Clark's household furniture . and effects and piano were insured in the Royal offico for £300. (rRESS ASSOCIATION* TELEGRAMS.) DUNEDIN. January 10. A fire was discovered by Constable Dunlop in Penrose'., drapers' establishment in George street at ten minutee to 7 this morning. A great deal of damage -was done by lire., smoke, and water before the outbreak was finally subdued. Tho stock is valued at .£30,000, and it is estimated that at least a third of it has been destroyed. There was no automatic alarm installation in the building. The insurances on tho stock amount to over £20,000, and on the buildinc to about £7000.
