GISBORNE. January 10
A serious accident is reported from Takapau. A man named Abbott, employed at tho Takapau station, was riding a horse behind a mob of sheep when the hor.o slinped over a steep face and rolled over several times with the rider still in the saddle. Abbott, who was seriously injured internally, was conveyed to tho Tokoinani Hospital. An operation wa.s found imperative, and the district doctor." for 50 miles around were mustered and the operation was suc-ccssfuHy performed.

Margaret Pointon. aged about 56 year., "suddenly collap.ed and died in Willis street yesterday afternoon while following her occupation a,s a new*, paper vendor. Heart disease is supposed to be the cause, of death. INVEHCARGILL. January 10. William Lewis Giffen. 18 years of a~o. was drowned yesterday afternoon whiist bathing in a gravel pit in the Surrey Park Estate. Another lad named Donald Eric Barclay attempted to rescue him, but failed.
