AQUATICS.

- . ARNST-.IN*;E__RN_ST.-;. ".. : . During his visit •to Sydney, _Dr. Thacker, who'was a great believer in the prowess of "Dick" Arnst, ex-cham-pion sculler of the world, and one 4 of his staunchest backers, had a chat with the ex-champion .in connexion with his future prospects in the sculling world. It was announced some time ago that Arnst bad sot his mine, on a last effort to regain the honours which he lost'to Barry in' the memorable race on the Thames. The conditions, it was stated, were that -Arnst must'go into hard training for six months,, and if at the end of that time he showed signs of regaining his old time power, he was to take to the water" again, and- endeavour to succeed in tlie hardest task a retired athlete can set himself—namely, to come back to his old form. "Dick is very determined, and most hopeful of being able to come' back," said Dr. Thacker, "and at present is in the best of health. 'He has] under-: taken to assist a runholder. who has taken up a section of rough country, in clearing his land, and for some time past has*-been engaged in bush-whack-ing. In the first fortnight he took 12lb off his weight, and - now scales about lost 41b. If he continues ",to improve* physically at the present rate, it is his intention to return to the sculls, and join Felton in his training for a. match with Pearce/ which- will be arranged shortly. Arnst will test himself thoroiighly before finally deciding to make another attempt to annex, the world s championship, and the least that can be said is that he is in deadly earnest."
