FROM 'THE PRESS" OF 1864.
SATURDAY, JULY 0. "The Government has, we understand, finally .determined, after taking the opinion of . the Railway Commissioners upon adopting the direct line for,the Southern railway out of Christchurch. Several alternative lines, were proposed in order to get the land at as reasonable a price as possible; but a_ a very disadvantageous loop in the line would have had to be selected in. order to gain any material advantage in the price of the land, the Government has decided to adopt the direct line. A considerable number of bargains for tho land have been already concluded, and i tho rest will shortly be purchased. In 'any diversion.of the line the additional cost of construction has, of course, to be considered, but the whole cost of taking tho direct lino is not estimated to exceed £3000 over any other line; that has therefore been finally adopted."
