ASHLEY.
Tho Ashley County Council met; at Loburn on Thursday. Present: 3Jessrs \V. Mackintosh' (chairman), Croft, Ensor, Hiatt, Parish, and Philpott. The Lnder-becretary of Public Works WTote, stating that the Resident Engineer, Christchurch, had sent the Minister a roport on tho Okuku bridge, and that the Council's application for a graut for a new bridge would be considered when the Public Works vote was allocated. It was decided to writo for a copy of the report, and to remind tho Minister of his promise to visit the district. In reply to a request from the Railway Department for suggestions as to the location of dangersignals near level crossings, it was decided to recommend a signal on Fawcett's road, near tho crossing to the Ashley railway station. In connexion with the matter of signals, it was decided to ascertain the cost of sign-poste at important junctions on the main road. 31r George Alfeld and Mr Adam Scott wrote, asking permission to fence across certain un,used roads on their properties. It was decided to grant the requests, provided legal conditions were fulfilled. The rating for the current year was discussed, and it was decided to advertise a notice of motion to strike a penny rate at nest iDotir ing. The bridge rate will not he levied this year. Notices to clear gorso were ordered to be sent out. It was resplved to recommend 'for tho Governor's approval that the middle line of tho Ashley river bo the boundary of the county on thafc side. Applications, chiefly for the benefit of school pupils, were mud r> for improvements on back roads leading to tho Okuku school; for a groyne at the Okuku ford, Inglis road, and for a. footbridge over the Makerikeri, on Carr's road (Upper). Applications were also made for tho formation of Skew road, and for repairs 011 the Eastern Downs road. These works were deemed useful, aud vero ordered to b.> kept in view for reconsideration when the present pressure of work authorised was approaching completion. M-- W T Bfirwoll interviewed the Council, and presentee! a petition on behalf of the proposed footbridge. The advantages of a car ami sheep bridge at this point wore noted, but for tho present the clerk w.-us instructed to report on the requirements of school children only. The clerk .™*J%° authorised to take action with regaid tn tho fords on the upper part of the Eastern Grey Tenders were opened cepfd at, Is 9id per cubic >'»«■£• «£ f"± 7s 6d for pit-stnpping. Tenders were ordered to be called for rleaxing broom and jgpree from the gull> near the Council's office.
