A GRAVE SITUATION.

(Received March 3rd, 11.20 p.m.)

WASHINGTON, March 2

President Wilson, in receiving prominent callers, gave the impression that he fully realised the gravity of the Mexican situation, and pointedly referred to certain eventualities which might mean a drastio course of action.

It is understood that if Britain alknra Benton's case to await adjudication until a stable Government has been established in Mexico, the United States will agree to that coarse.

President Wilson emphasised the fact that foreign nations had no right to demand that the United States should look after their subjects, neither could they demand it if General Can&nza irristed on his right not to deal with any Government in the interests of any other Government. If they did, a very grave situation would be produced, and tho United States would be compelled to take action.
