ALARMING PICTURE FROM THE NORTH.

WHAT A CHRJSTCHURCH MAN SAW. A Christchurch resident with interests north of Auckland, who has recently been visiting the infected districts informs us that the freedom with which convalescents travel about within the district is a most disquieting feature tc tho uninfected, as clothing and personal belongings must carry infection. Regarding tho lymph, he himself was vaccinated three times before it took, and he says that tho failure of the lymph to. "take" in so large a number of cases is not only condemnatory A the quality of the lymph supplied,, but has done harm in shaking faith in vaccination in the infected districts. Since his return from the North the Christchurch man has received a letter from. a friend who has been visiting the " Mangakahia Valley. He writes:—"The is very bad up there, and I tried to avoid it as much as possible. I burnt the clothes I wore, and had a good bath on my return, but it is impossible to go far without meeting someone with it. I had to go into a store to get a wire, where the -proprietor just recovering, his faco-and hands covered with spots although healed _up a good bit, was serving out biscuits and things to anybody who came in. Such a place ought to have been shut up by the Health authorities," I think, as the convalescent bandies clothes, telegrams, letters, everything in fact. "I am glad I did not stay long in the place, I bolted as soon as I could get hold of tho wire. I must have seen a dozen Maoris ridipg on the with spots on them. It is no wonder it has spread - so, as no one seems to be there to keep the convalescents from travelling- about the roads."
