SPREYDON
The installation of tho newly-elected Mayor of Spreydon, Mr G. R. Whiting, took place last night in the Barrington street Council Chambers, Mr AY. It. Gahagan presiding.
The retiring .Mayor, .Mr W. K. Gahagan, expressed his gratitude to the members of the, Council lor their support during the year, and his regret at the retirement from local politics of Crs. Thornton, Nairn, Bowles, and Powrie. Ho mentioned with especial esteem Cr. Thornton, whose experience and advice had proved most valuable to the Council. An important matter which would soon have to be dealt with was that of. drainage- Jn his opinion it would be necessary to hare a Local JBill put through Parliament giving control of all drains to the Council. With regard to loan works, much had been said about money having been wasted, -but he was pleased to say that nearly, all the work undertaken was nearing completion, and at the" last meeting there was only a debit on. the account amounting to, £433. If the City Council provided the amount of £200 promised towards the widening of Strick-
land street there would then be only a j debit of £L' 33. Ueueral works wero small, and little had been i>pent on them, but the small sum allowed HaU been (>pent well. A yood sum had betn < siK-ut in roiling ami repairing stteet-s, and on thfrepuirinij and aspiialting ot footpaths. Tho lUver roa<l had cost the Council some anxiety. Culverts Had been put across the track that should j bo a road, and the work of tilling up j had been gone on with, but it was still unable to be used. He recommended tlrat the new Council should put a small i>um on the estimates again for this purpose. The only thing ho was sorry ior about the shingle pit was that )t had not been obtained earlier; but he was sure this would be one- of tho j greatest boons .Sprcydon ever had had. The balance-sheet for the year showed a net balance of £i'2ij Us lid. Air Gahagan then formally invested the Mayor-elect with th« insignia ot office, and expressed his best wishes for a prosperous year. .Mr Vt'hiting, in replying, said he felt gratified that at the recent elections every one of the old Councillors was returned to office with a large majority in his favour. With regard to the work for the coming year, he intended to ask the Council to appoint a Drainage Committee to go into the matter of drainage, to which Mr Uahagan had referred, and he advised that another deputation should wait upon tho l>rainagt> Board asking them to carry out tho Council's scheme. If this proved unsuccessful, he recommended that Mr Gahagan's suggestion should bo followed. Another matter which demanded immediate consideration was that of street-formation, channelling, and asphalting, also that of dust-col-lecting.
