LYTTELTON.
The installation of Mr J. R. Webb as Mayor of Lyttelton took place last night in the Borough Council Chambers. The retiring Mayor (Cr. M. J. "Miller) occupied the chair, and there wore present tho Mayor-elect, Mr J. R. Webb, Councillors W. Radcliffe, J. T. Norton. W. T. Foster, F. J. Page J. H. Collins, and N. C. Schumacher seated at tho Council taule, and excouncillors S. R. Webb, W. T. Lester, and W. Luke. Before vacating tho Mayoral chair, Cr. M. J. Miller said that his three years' term of office had been exceedingly pleasant ones, and his relations with councillors And tho members of the borough staff had been most cordial. While there had been progress and activity in every branch of municipal work, the Council had not saddled the ratepayers with any liabilities other than those sanctioned by them by way of loan, and it was satisfactory to note that thece had been a. reduction, in the overdraft. Mr Miller also dwelt at length on the numerous public works successfully carried out during his term of office, and speaking of tho future, he said that there were many important works to be handled. The Diamond Harbour scheme would require to bo well handled and pushed forward, also the important schemes for tho improvement of Simeon quay and the Sumner road zig-zag. Very shortly also the Council would have to take up the question of supply of electric power from Lake Coleridge. Hβ trusted that the coming year would be one of progress, and he wished his successor every success. (Applause./ . Mr J. R. Webb was then installed as Mayor. , ", Mr Webb said thero was much work before tho Council which would have to devote much energy and attention to tho Diamond Harbour Settlement scheme to make it a success. Hβ much regretted-the loss of population in Lyttefton, and he fully realised that a forward movement was necessary in connection with the housing problem in the borough, to make provision for those desirous of living in. the Port. The Council had some good building sites, and it was for them to decide ■whether they should go in. for the erection of dwellings. Mr Webb touched on a number or needed improvements in tho borough, including Corsair Bay.
