This match, which was played at tho Show Grounds, -gave Canterbury College thoir first win of the season, and on the whole they had tho better of tho game. Though at tho start of tho second spell the Marists pressed them hard, they were unable to sustain their effort, and at thiv close. College hod thorn defending. The game was not by any means high-class., and tho' combined work attempted by either ;-id(> generally broko down at v critical moment. The teams were: — Canterbury College.—FulJ-Back, J. College attacked immediately after the start of the game and as tfie result of fast following up of a long kick, Young scored a try* which Read failed to convert. College kept up tho pressure, and from a free-kick, Dead placed a goal. The Marists then livened up. and their forwards put a bit more dash into their work. Muriitt charged down a. kick by an opposing back, but, trying to pick un the ball, lost a capital chance by knocking on. A few moments later "\V. Mahoney, securing the ball from a scrum near the College line, forced his way across, but lost the ball. Tho remainder of the spell brought practically no incidents worth recording, the play consisting of long kicks into touch by the backs. At the opening of the second half, College made a strong attack, in which Read was jironrnent, but this was safely repulsed, and for a considerable time afterwards the Marists had much the better of the game. A forward rush took play to the College line, and Baker dashed across in a good portion. AY. Mahoney, however, failed with the shot at goal, and the same player missed a couple of fairly easy shots from penalty kicks in ouick succession. The College forwards gradually cleared their line, and drove their opponents back to their own twenty-five. From a free-kick to Marists, the ball was well taken by Blank, who potted a L'ood goal. The closing stages of the game were all in favour of College, but there was no further score, and the game ended:—Canterbury College 10 points (a potted goat. a penalty goal, and a try).. Marist Old Boys 3 points (a try). Mr S. W. Binns was referee.
