CHARGES OF ASSAULT. The Full Court upheld tne demurrer raised by plaintiff in the cr.se of Mr Perry, a member of the Assembly, against the Speaker, Mr Willis, and tho Sergeant-at-Anns, for assault and wrongful imprisonment, arising out of the retent scenes in the Assembly. Defendants pleaded not guilt" and that their action was taken for the purpose of preserving order and maintaining the Standing Orders of the House. Plaintiff demurred on tho eooond plea, claiming that defendants had disclosed no justification for his being brought back to the House in custody and detained. The Court held that the Speaker was merely acting as chairman of a meeting, and had no positive power. Tho cause of the disorder having been removed by plaintiff leaving the House, tho Speaker had no power to bring him back, an action which Mr Justice Pring characterised as an extraordinary deprivation of a mans liberty.
