LYTTELTON.
Messrs G. A. Lewin, J.P., and J. Garrard, J.P., presided at the Lyttelton Magistrate's Court yesterday.
William 'Doyle, alias Win. Ballantine, who had been previously convicted, was fined '20s, in default 7 days' imprisonment, for drunkenness.
Alexander Webster Bridges was charged with having, about June 18th, at Wellington, stolen a bicycle, valued at £8, tho property of Walter Hi'lier Andorcon. On the application of tho police, accused was remanded to appaar at Wellington to-day. Charles Hoathly, a seaman on the brigantine Rio Logo, was charged that on July 2nd, at Port Chalmeo-s, ho did assault "William Spence, master of the vessel. ->ir Beswiok appeared for Captain Spence.
Evidence Mas given to show that as the vessel M-as leaving Port Chalmers for Lyttelton, the aocaised refused to "turn-to," on tlio ground that ho M-as not well. Tho mate informed the captain, who called t__o accused. Tho latter walked up to tho master and stru-k him with a broom handle, breaking his left arm.
Accused gave 'evidence stating that ho had had great provocation, as the captain had refused to pay him off, or pay money due to him. Accused admitted, however, that he had been drunk, and also that he had been oreviously convicted of theft, using obscene language and of a-jsa-ilt.
The Bench fined accused £5, nnd costs £2 2s, in elefault one month's imprisonment. Half the fine was ordered to be paid to Captain Spcnce. Accused remarked, however, that he "would tako it out" in gaol.
