Donoghuo applied for on order under a judgment summons for £7 7s od against H. Rountree. Thei*e was no appearance of the debtor, and tho amount was ordered to bo paid forthwith, iv default fourteen "days' imprisonment. Edmonds and Pago, Ltd. (Mr Weston) claimed from Wm. Miller and Thomas Henry Evans (Mr Dou_all), £40 lis lOd. It was started that Miller, who had been eontractin_- for Evans, assigned his estate. l_ater, Mason, .-"truthers and Co., to whom he owed £09 los ldj got liim to give an order on Evans for that amount, which was paid only when proceedings were throitenod. Other creditors lodged claims n-uder t_i«_ Contractors and Workmen' 6 Lion Act, and this case was brought to ascertain whether Evens wis justified in paying Mason, Strut-here and Co. The Magistrate', after hearing legal argument, reserved Ins decision. Messrs G. A. Lewin, J.P., and G. C. Smith, J.P., presided at the Lyttelton Man-istrate's Court yesterday. Fiederick Fulcher, a fireman, was charged with having, on May <~/.th. stolen a "silver watch, valued at £5, tho property of Joseph Smart. Accused plead-rd guilty, and it wes shown in evidence that Smart, when in the company of a number of firomnn, had piodiiced tho watch and offered to seil it. Accused took the vat ah f-nd did notpay for it. The watch disappeared, and Fulcher denied ali knowledge of it, but afterwa*rds ownod vp to the police, and told them where.it had been hidden. Accused was fined £1, in default seven days' imprison ment.
