DOMAIN BOARD.

« A • special one-ting of the Domain Board was held yesterday. Present—Messrs H. J. Beswick (chairman), W. Dunlop, H. P. MurrayAynsley, S. A. Staples, G. Scott, G. Witty, M.P., T. H. Davey, M.P., B. P. Manhire, and the Mayor of Christchurch. The meeting was held for the purpose of appointing a head gardener in place of Mr Dawes, resigned. The Chairman said that twenty-three applications had been received. The Executive had gono through the applications very carefully, and had decided to recommend the runner-up last time, Mr Young, of the Ashburton Domain. Tho Ashburton peoplo would be very sorry to lose Mr Young, who was coming to Christchurch at a lower salary than he was now receiving, but there was moro scope here for his work. He moved:—"That Mr Young, now of tho Ashburton Domain, be appointed as head gardener." Mr Davey seconded the motion, which was agreed to. A letter was read from the secretary of the Band Contest Committee, asking for leave to give band performances of sacied music in Hagley Park on Sundays. Collections would be made in aid of the Contest Fund, Mr Murray-Aynsley said that the Board should mako a provision, if they gave permission, that the collection should not be made at the gates, and only from those close in where tho bands wero playing. Mr Davey asked whether there was nob a resolution on the books to the effect that bands should not be allowed to make collections. Tho Mayor moved:—"That the request be granted." He could not see any more objection to a collection by the bands than to collecting in a church. The Board were asking the City Council to arrange for some of their municipal band concerts to be given on Sunday afternoonsj and he could not sco the difference in this request. Mr Scott seconded the motion, provided the restrictions mentioned by Mr Aynslcy were imposed. Mr Manhire pointed out that the Woolston Band had applied for leave to play in aid of their Contest Fund, hut had been refused. The Secretary explained that the application of the Woolston Band was to play in the Domain, on the archery ground, but this was refused. There was a definite resolution on the hooks to the effect that no permission should be given to play in the Domain. The motion was put and carried on a division. It was resolved that the perroisskm shonld be given provided that no collection was made outside a radius of one hundred yards from where the bands were playing, or on any of tho paths.
