United Press Association—By .Electric Telegraph—Copyright v LONDON, April 17.
Five ex-Gorvernoxs-General of Canada propose that the British publio should subscribe a quarter of a milEon sterling towards the Dominion scheme to convert the battlefields of Quebec into a public park.
At a preliminary meeting in t_e Mansion House the movement was well sup-ported.
Tbe Lord Mayor said that no doubt ihe appeal would be successful.
It is intended that the. 300-1 birthday of Canada, end of Greater Britain, shall bo celebrated in July by the consecration of the battlefields of. the Plains of Abraham and Ste. Foy, and the vesting of them in the haffds of national trustees, as a national park, to be known as "The King Edward Pj-rk." The ground where Wolfe fell, which h!& been called the most sacred acre ot ground in the North American Continent, is at present disfigured by a gaol and other buildings. It is proposed to remove these, purchase certain lands for the creation of a national park, erect a museum for records of the past, and following the example of the Americans in the Statue of Liberty at New York, put up a memorial to Wolfe, in the shape of a gigantic Angel of Peace.
Subscription lists were opened in Lcndoh and Paris some weeks ago, and the "Spectator" expressed the wish that th_ -whole Empire should be permitted to subscribe to an object of such. Imperial interest.
