THE WOLVERHAMPTON BYELECTION.
LONDON, April 18.
The issue of. the writ for the "Wolverhampton by-election, • for which Mr L., S.j Amery will again stand, has beepostponed. This is attributed to a desire of Mr G. Thorne", the Liberal candidate, to retire in favour of Mr Winston Churchill in the event of the latter's defeat at Manchester.
This election is to fill the vacancy caused by tho elevation of Sir Henry Fowler to the House of Lords. If we accept the 1906 election as a guide. Wolverhampton may be considered a safe Liberal seat, for Sir Hepiy Fowler defeated Mr A_mery by nearly 3000 votes. Sir. Henry, however, was a Cabinet Minister, and had represented the constituency since 1885. Mr Amery has had a very distinguished career. He is known chiefly by his brilliant editing of "The Timee/' history of the South African "War. He is also the author of "The Problem of the Army," and "The Fundamental Fallacies of Freetrade."
