She had been put in a room to sleep, but it is supposed got »ip and got some matches out of some clothes in the room. She was suffocated and badly burned. An inquest will be held to-morrow. WESTPORT, January 4. Walters, one of the Dundonald sur--rirors, employed, as a aailor on the steamer Kennedy, narrowly escaped losing a leg yesterday. As the steamer was "dropping down stream he got his ioot caught >n a bight of rope. Tho foot was strained and swollen, and the man had to be removed to the hospital. INVERCARGILL, January 4. William Hazlett, aged 34, a farmer at South Hillond, was killed on Friday afternoon by a fall of earth, his pirk penetrating the abdomen. GORE, January 4. An old man named Alexander Noble, "0 years of age. was found dead at Mandeville this morning. He had been ailing for some time. An inquest will probably be held.
