THE GAMING AND LOTTERIES ACT.
-♦_ _ On receipt of the news that the Governor's signature had been appended to the new Gaming Act, the bookmakers in Chriatchurch closed their shops. We understand that there is a movemeat on foot to form, a Bookmakers' Association of New Zealand. It will make recommendations to racing clubs in regard to the issue of licensee to bookmakers, and exercise a general oversight of the business, with the object<of ensuring that it is run on straight lines by those licensed. Mr 0. M. Gray, M.H.R., in answer to a telegram sent to the Premier yesterday regarding the petition presented to the House last week on behalf of the bookmakers recently sentenced at Christchurch, has been informed that tne matter -will be considered at the next meeting of the Cabinet. The leading bookmakers in this city have given notice to their clients that, owing to the new Gaming Act, which limits betting exclusively to the racecourse, coming into force immediately, and being desirous of conforming strictly to the law, they have unanimously decided to close all ante-post b#ke in connection with double and straight-out business on. forthcoming events.
