THE HOLIDAY QUESTION.
At a meeting of the Holidays Commlttco of the Chamber of Commerce it was decided to send the following letter to the Premier:—"Aβ thoro was a great deal of confusion here last year on account of a large number of people wishing to close on Empire Day (May 2-tt.h), and a large number also being compelled to close on Prince of Walesa Birthday (June 3rd) (the latter ovring to the Arbitration Act), and still further in view of the fact that there seems to be a strong wave of feeling in favour of adopting Empire Day cc the statutory holid/ay in preference to the Prince of Walese Birthday, it is hereby resolved at this special meeting of tho Holidays Committee of this Chamber, that the Premier be respectfully asked to introduce and put through the House, before the close of the present session, the necessary legislation to enable Empire Day (May 24th) to be held by all as a statutory holiday, in lieu of the Prince of Wales's Birthday (June 3rd); also, if it is decided that Dominion Day is to be regularly observed, that it be a strong recommendation from this committee that the Anniversary Days of the various provincial districts should be abolished in favour of one day annuahy to be known as Dominion Day."
