NORTH CANTERBURY EDUCATION BOARD.

The North Canterbury Education Board met yesterday. Present:— Messrs M. Dalziel (chairman), T. W. Adams, H. W. Peryman, J. Rennie, J. Jamieson, T. W. Rowe, end Dr. Hight. REPORTS OF COMMITTEES. Tho Buildings Committee reported ac follows:—The additions to the Midland Railway .School ore to be provided by the Department, and the Committee expressed pleasure at the prompt action of the Department. The work at Sumner main school being larger than at first anticipated, en additional sum of £5 was voted. The report was adopted, and on the Committee's recommendations the following tenders were accepted:—F. Pearce. house, Springfield, £364. For painting and repairs to school buildings:—C. Joheneen, Hornby school, £U: G. A. Mazey. Yeldhurst £42 15e Killinchy £73, Doyleston £95 ; W. Burnett, Brook6ide, £69 15s; Bate and Hoskin, Kaiapoi Island, £24, end Clarkville, £36 10s. The Appointments Committee recommended the following appointments: Miss D. Hemplemnn. mistress, Brookside; Miss M. L. Wilkinson, first assistant mistress, secondary department, end MrC W. Allard, assistant master) primary department, Cbristchureh West; Miss E. Steele, mistress, Flaxton; Miss M. C. Hodgson, assistant mistress. Elmnood School St. Alb«ns; Miss G. Glanville, assistant secondary deportment, Soutlibridge; Mr L. G. Whitehead, assistant master. Sydenhnm; Miss A. M. Allen, assistant mistress, Waltham; Mr F. A. Siloock. master, Eyreton West; Miss A. Dynes, assistant mistress. Ricearton; Miss C. Bain, pupil ieacher of the third year, Richmond. The resignotion of Mrs J. Wiigstaff as assietnnt mistress at Gloucester street, in order to take up duties et the Training Collece, was accepted. Mrs E. \. A. So nd ford's resignation of Ibe Chnring Cross School was accepted v.ith regret. The report v\4as agreed to. The Normal School and Technical Committee reported that Mr T. W. Rowe i had been asked to act as the Boards representative on the society proposed to be formed to consider Professor Bickerton's impact theory of cosmic evolution. Delegates from the Board, and from the managers of the Technical Classes are to meet and odj" st the capitation in connection with the School of Domestic Instruction. Tho report was agreed to. .MISCELLANEOUS. It was decided to ask tho Departs ment to abolish the twenty-mile limit in connection with the Cadet Battalion camps. Tho application of the No. 2 Battalion, to go into camp for instruction purposes, was granted. Captain Treleaven wrote regarding miniature rifle ranges, and it was decided to thank him, and to consider the letter when the matter next comes before the Board. It waa decided to recommend the Department to extend for one year tho scholarship held by W-m. O. R. Gilling. It was resolved to support the amendment proposed by the Nelson Board that the voting -papers for the election of members of the Board ibe sent direct to members of School Committees, and not, as at present, sent to the chairmen of the committees. A deputation from tho St. Albans School Committee waited on tho Board and requested that the grounds at the main school should be re-graded. It was decided to refer the matter to the Building Committee. The Board received a letter from the Department, asking that in cases where the District Health Officer's certificate is required, head teachers should be instructed to furnish a list of the childre-n affected by disease ot an epidemic character. It was agreed to inform tho Department of the steps already taken to obtain the information desired by the District Healtli Officer. Following the practice of the previous two years, the Board resolved thnt the sum of £812 expended by School Committees out of incidental allowance for the year ending March 31st last, be * charge on the building funds, and that the treasurer 'be authorised to make tho necessary transfer from the buildings to the maintenance account. "Mr M. Balziel' reported having visited the Richmond school with Mr Jamieson and the clerk of works. In regard to tho arrangement of desks in the brick schoolroom, it was found that in order to give effect to the committee's proposal serious difficulties, requiring further consideration, would arise, and that the requisite number of dual desks could not bo got into the rooms.
