« Tho North. Canterbury Mounted Rifles, who were in camp on the Rjitgiora Show Ground during the past week, attended St. John's Church, Rangiora, on Sunday morning. The company mustered 35, md the officers present were Captain Uru and Lieuts. Font ham and Mooch-. Major Cosegiove and Captain Borthwiek, of tho Rangiora Rifles, were also present. The Kcv. F. P, Fend ill preached an appropriate sermon. The camp, which was visited during the day by a good many people, broke up in the evening. A district order notifies that tne King Edward Barracks will be closed jor drill from November 2nd to 9th iiclusive, owing to the performance of tho Military Circus in aid of :hc building fund. Surgeon-Captain J. R. Thomas, M.8., New Zealand Medical Corps, has been attached to No. 3 Company, New Zealand Field Hospital and Bearer Corps, for medical duties. A district order, just issued, has the following in regard to the general class of instruction to bo held in this city from November 12th to 21st:—"In view of the fact that large numbers of officers have attended the classes held in Auckland, Wellington, and Dunedin, it is anticipated that a large number of officers from the Canterbury district will bo able to attend in Christchurch. Officers wishing to attend the class should send in their names ns early as possible, in order that arrangements may be made for their accommodation, etc." Every encouragement is to be given to those volunteer and defence cadet officers who wish to enter for the staff and permanent force examinations. The first examination will be hold on the last Monday of May next. In reference to military history, the examinations, aa far as the general questions are concerned, will be taken fiom Henderson's "Stonewall Jackson." The special period will be that of the Shenandoah Valley campaign, from April, 1861, to 9th June, 1862. Tlie services of the Canterbury Scouts have been accepted as from August loth, 1907, and those of the Kaituna Defence Rifle Club as from August 10th, 1907. Lieut. C. H. Hewlett (Christ's College Rifles) and Lieut. C. G. Morgan (limtru Port Guards) have passed their examinations for commissions. Sergeants Smith, Clelland, Saver, and Dash (Waimate Rifles) have passed their examination for sergeants; Corporals McKenzie, Miller, and Duncan, of the same corps, havo passed as oorE orals; Sergeants Stephens and Camridge (Ashburton Guards), as sergeants; Corporal Collins (same corps), a 9 corporal; Corporal Childs (Ashburton Rifles), as corporal; Corporal O'Leary iTimaru Port Guards), as corporal;* and Sergeant Robertson (Timaru City Rifles), m sergeants. The appointment of Captain (adjutant) Wm, Fodon, South Canterbury Battalion of Infantry Volunteers, as additional member of the Local Board of Military Examination, has been approved, with ettect from September 9th, 1907.
