ASHBURTON.

Our commercial correspondent writes a? follows:—Wheat —The past week has been one of excitement. As reported lost week, enquiry was corning to hand freely for all classes of milling wheat. This was followed by the excitement in the American market, and consequently a heavy rise in prices. Merchants and millers have, in consequonce, been keen buyers, and several large lines have been disposed of, and will forthwith go into coneumiition. The limit has now practically reached tho level attained after the excitement in May, and with tho latest cable messages from the London market showing a further shilling per quarter rise, there is little chance of prices easing again in this district for some time to come. Among the more important sales reported are the following: —About 4U,U00 bushels mixed wheats, at 4s -Id on trucks; 12.1X10 bushels, ot 4s 3d on trucks; about 40C0 biuliels Hunters, at 4s 3d on trucks; 4500 bushels Tuscan and Hunters at is 4d ex store. Besides these, several smaller sales have taken place practically on the samo basis. This disposes of almost nil tho more important lines in tho district, 'lhcro are still some few small farmers' lots held, and for these owners are. holding to.- 4s (id per bushel. We quote today's values on trucks, os follows: — Tuscan and Pearl, 4s 4d; Hunters, 4s 3d, whole fowl wheat, 4s; good seconds, 3a lOd. Oats—There is still good enquiry for heavy feed and Dun outs, but it is almost impossible to fill orders. There is practically nothing in tho stores, and no threshing is taking place in the country. Farmers aro instead cutting into chaff, which is being railed away as fast as supplies can bo obtained. Quotations for oats aro nominal, being: Canadians, 3s 3d; good feed, 3s; Danish and lishter feed, 2s lOd. Oatshoaf Chaff—Extra prime quality, Was; lighter, ( JOs on trucks; sacks extra.
