CANTERBURY COLLEGE v LYTTEL TON.
Tlie two new senior clubs Canterbury College and Lyttelton, met for the first time on the hitter's ground on Saturday last, when a fairly even, but most uninteresting game, resulted in a draw, no score being obtained by either side. Lyttelton kicked off against a strong breeze, and for the first few minutes' play was in neutral territory, from which it'was removed to the "Magentas' (Lyttelton) line by good forward work of Benjamin and Folia, From a scrum which ensued Acheson got away, but was well tackled by Oliver, and a lusty kTck by Berry sent*the ball into the College twenty-five. Mjoriand (College) dribbled back "to the Port end, and a quick pass from Sellar to Rice enabled tho latter to make a dash for the line, which he succeeded in crossing, but lost the ball in attempting to ground it. After tha kick out the Lyttelton forwards livened to their work, and a series of dribbling rushes, in which Loader, Fenton, Douglas, and Morris were prominent, momentarily placed the Maroon goal in danger. Bishop relieved the pressure, and Berry failing to take a high kick, the ball returned to the other end of the field, several fine attempts at goal being made by Rice. College mode the game open, and indulged in some pretty passing rushes among the backs, but determined tackling on the port of their opponents frustrated their efforts to score. In the second spell the Port men made more use of their backs, whose kicking was first-class, while the College forwards, though playing against the wind, showed improved form. For the first few minutes play hovered in the Maroon twentyfive, until Rice came away with a strong run, but failed to pass when tackled by the full-back, thus losing an almost certain score. Koskella and J. Morris returned to the College territory, and some scrambling rushes by the Port forwards caused the former to be forced twice in succession. College rallied, and a run by Falla was well stopped by Oliver, the former being hurt by the collision, and having to retire. From this till the call of time even play was witnessed. On one occasion Berry mado a good, though fruitless, pot at goai. Mr A. F. Hobbs officiated as referee.
